Athensmed has made an investment in Surgerix Oy, a health technology company based in Kuopio that is developing a software solution to assist physicians performing microsurgery. The investment is part of a funding round that Surgerix put together after winning the Health Design pitching competition in 2025.
Surgerix builds on research from the University of Eastern Finland and the Microsurgery Center at Kuopio University Hospital. The company’s video processing method combines the image from digital microscopes, endoscopes and other cameras in real time into a single view, giving surgeons a clearer picture of the tissue being operated on and its surroundings. The aim is to improve the safety and precision of surgeries: first through surgical training centers, and next in hospitals in the Nordics and elsewhere in Europe.

“This funding helps us reduce the risks associated with the clinical adoption of the application. With this funding, we will be able to carry out preclinical research and prepare the product for commercialization in the European and North American markets,” says Surgerix founder and CEO Mikko Pitkänen.
For Athensmed, the investment fits naturally with the company’s principle of placing increasing emphasis on societal impact alongside financial returns. Health technology that directly improves patient safety and the quality of surgeons’ work delivers exactly the kind of impact Athensmed seeks in its portfolio.
“Surgerix stood out strongly in the investment competition and in the discussions that followed. In particular, direct feedback from neurosurgeons and the technology’s strength relative to competing players were convincing,” says Athensmed founder and CEO Kustaa Piha.
The Surgerix investment will be added to Athensmed’s portfolio, and the company’s progress will continue to be tracked through Athensmed’s channels.
